Moving to a New State: Important Documents to Update

When you take up residence in a new state or territory, there are several important documents that you will need to get updated in order to stay current with residential laws. With all of the stress and bustle that comes along with a long distance move, we thought that we would help by listing the documents that you should be aware of once you get to your new home. Be sure to update the necessary documents within the legally given time frame of moving to a new state.

    Driver’s License

You will want to get a new driver’s license within 30 days of moving to a new state. Make an appointment at your local Department of Motor Vehicle location, and be sure to bring other documents with you to prove your identity such as a birth certificate or social security card.

    Vehicle Registration & Title

When you visit the DMV, be sure to also register your vehicle and get your new license plate. If you plan or trying to trade or sell your vehicle at any time you will also want to request a new title from your new state of residence.

    Insurance Policies

Update all insurance policies that were attached to your old address. Auto insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, and pet insurance will all need to be updated in accordance with your new residence.

    Financial Documents

All banks accounts, IRAs, loans, and investment accounts should be updated promptly upon moving to another state. Contact each individual financial institution to find out whether you can update electronically or if you need to mail in a form.

    Work Documents

Update your W4 or other tax documents you may have to reflect your new residence. Taxes vary from state to state, so be sure to do this promptly so that you don’t wind up owing any taxes at the end of the year. Also look into any insurance policies or 401ks associated with your employment.

    Passports

Request a new passport promptly to prevent any travel restrictions on your future plans. Passports can often take a while to process so start on this process as soon as possible.
