Getting organized through home decluttering is a powerful way to create a cleaner, more functional space. This home decluttering guide helps simplify your space by providing practical tips to reduce clutter, organize belongings, and maintain a clean, functional environment.
How to Declutter Your Home
When decluttering your home, begin by sorting your belongings using the four-box method: trash, give away, keep, or relocate. This method helps you focus on each item’s value while clearing out unnecessary clutter. Tackling small, manageable areas like drawers or shelves first can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to continue. By donating unused items, you’ll reduce clutter and help others.
Finally, maintaining an organized home requires creating designated spaces for everything to ensure easy access when needed. Follow these steps, including those below, to organize and declutter your home.
Start Small and Set a Plan: Instead of diving into your entire home at once, focus on one room or area at a time. Prioritize the areas that require immediate attention. Create a checklist to ensure you’re working methodically and don’t overlook any spaces.
Declutter in Time Blocks: Set aside dedicated time to declutter. You can break it into manageable chunks, such as an hour a day or 15-minute sprints. Using a timer can help maintain focus and ensure you’re making progress consistently.
Create Four Piles: Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash: When sorting items, use the four-pile method: Keep, Donate, Sell, or Trash. This allows you to make quick decisions about each item and reduces clutter without overthinking. Place items you want to keep back into organized storage, donate or sell items you no longer need, and responsibly discard the rest.
Use Storage Solutions Wisely: Invest in appropriate storage solutions like bins, baskets, and shelves. Vertical storage helps save floor space and keeps the room looking tidy. Consider under-bed storage, stackable bins, or wall-mounted shelves to maximize organization.
Digitize Where Possible: For items like old paperwork, photos, and receipts, consider scanning and storing them digitally. This reduces physical clutter and ensures you still have access to important documents when needed.
Tackle One Category at a Time: Instead of decluttering room by room, you can also try the category method (e.g., clothing, books, kitchen items). By addressing one category, you can clearly assess what you own and avoid duplicating efforts across multiple rooms.
Practice Daily Maintenance: Once you’ve decluttered your home, keep it organized with daily maintenance. Designate specific places for commonly used items and return things to their spots immediately after use. This habit prevents new clutter from forming.
Use a Donation Box: Keep a designated donation box in a convenient location. Whenever you come across an item you no longer use, place it in the box. Once it’s full, drop it off at your local charity or donation center.
Be Realistic and Let Go of Sentimental Items: Holding onto items for sentimental reasons can cause clutter. Instead of keeping everything, choose one or two meaningful pieces to display, and let go of the rest. Photos and memories can often serve the same purpose without taking up physical space.
Set Goals for Minimalism: Set goals for how you want your space to look and feel. Whether it’s achieving a minimalist lifestyle or simply keeping things tidy, having clear objectives will motivate you to stay on track.
Storage Options Used for Decluttering
Temporary On-Site Storage: One storage option is portable storage containers, which are dropped off at your home and collected later. You can declutter at your own pace, and the company will transport the container to a storage facility when ready.
Short-Term Facility Storage: Another temporary storage option is to store your items at a secure storage facility, like those offered by Carey Moving & Storage. These units are climate-controlled and fully secured to keep your items in the best shape.
Long-Term Storage: If you’re downsizing or not ready to part with certain items, long-term storage units offer a safe and secure way to store your belongings. These facilities are climate-controlled and monitored, ensuring that your items are protected.
Warehouse Storage: Movers offer warehouse storage, which is ideal for large items like furniture. This option helps keep your home clutter-free by allowing you to store bulky items while you organize your space.
Specialty Storage: Movers provide tailored storage for valuable items like antiques, artwork, or fragile belongings. This ensures that your prized possessions are securely stored while you declutter your living spaces.
Bins and Baskets: These are versatile and come in various sizes and designs. Use them to store toys, clothing, or miscellaneous items while keeping them out of sight.
Shelves: Wall-mounted shelves are excellent for maximizing vertical space. They’re great for displaying books, decorative items, or storing items you want easy access to.
Under-Bed Storage: This often-overlooked space can be utilized with storage containers designed to slide under your bed. Ideal for seasonal clothing or bedding, these containers keep things hidden but accessible.
Storage Cabinets: Cabinets with doors provide an easy way to store and organize things while keeping clutter out of view. They work well in kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices.
Multi-Functional Furniture: Furniture like ottomans or coffee tables with built-in storage helps you save space and reduce clutter, giving you both function and aesthetics.
Self-Storage Units: For larger items or things, you don’t frequently use, self-storage units offer a safe and accessible option, keeping your home clutter-free.

We are settled in, and have time to consider how easily the move was from Vonore, TN to Lansing, MI.The move not nearly as hectic as we thought it would be, this is in part due to the excellent performance by your people, namely Justin Schott the group leader. Justin had a handle on the entire move. Justin’s concerns were that the items be handled carefully and that they be placed where the client wanted them. Tim and Xavier are fine gentlemen, they too had the same concerns as Justin. Cody and Joe did their best to pack our goods so as to have little damage. The named are a credit to the Carey Moving Company. We are happy that we named you folks to do our transfer, thank you.

Pat-As mentioned we have not fully unpacked yet so hopefully all things are here. Other than that confirmation, the fellows who moved us were extremely courteous and mannerly. Much appreciated. They were very careful about not scratching the walls. They were also careful to ask where items should be placed. They arrived on time for delivery.

I would like the manager of the Arden office to know that the staff that handled our move into your storage facility was superb. Kim explained everything very clearly up front and there were no nasty surprises thereafter. Brian bossed the packing day and the loading day with ease and grace and I cannot tell you how relieved I was to know I was in good hands. The others, Lori, Doug, Tom, and Bob were also very good at what they do. Thank you. I look forward to delivery as soon as we find a place. Thank you.

I received my shipment on Sunday Feb 23rd. All items were in perfect shape. It was a great experience working with your company. Patrick was very helpful and knowledgeable. Being that I was in South Carolina for a very short time, he succeeded in getting everything set up in a timely manner to be packed and put on the truck. The packers were very nice and efficient and obviously packed items very well. The driver was thoughtful and called me several times to assure me that my items were on the way. He was friendly and efficient when he dropped off the boxes. You were very kind and helpful every time I called with a question and quickly handled all the paperwork. Please pass on our thanks and appreciation to all the people involved in the transport of our items.
