5 Safety Tips for Moving During the Pandemic

A good portion of the country is laying low, social distancing, and staying home as much as possible during the Coronavirus pandemic. But for some, a shelter in place order could be interfering with moving plans. For those of us who need to move during the crisis, there are steps that can be taken to lower the risk of infection during the process. We have outlined a few for you here:

    1. Acquire fresh packing supplies – it is common during a move to collect boxes from grocery and liquor stores to prepare and save money on supplies. This is not recommended at this time. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study which claimed that the novel Coronavirus could live on cardboard for up to 24 hours. So buy new boxes, tape, and bubble wrap – don’t reuse supplies.
    2. Be in contact with your mover – double check all aspects of your move with your moving company. Most moving companies are still in operation and are considered “essential businesses”, but if you’re move requires extensive travel, you may have some extra hurdles to figure out.
    3. Use moving methods that limit contact – many moving companies have begun to implement virtual estimate services. Consolidate and organize your belongings as much as you can before moving day to limit the amount of contact within the home.
    4. Be prepared with sanitizing materials – some moving companies are providing their employees with protective gear such as masks and gloves. If you can provide hand soap and a sink for workers on moving day, that’s great. If not, keep hand sanitizer and hand sanitizing wipes nearby.
    5. Reschedule your move if anyone in your household feels ill – safety is crucial. Notify your moving company immediately if you need to postpone your move due to illness.
