Staying Organized is the Key to a Successful Move

Planning ahead and keeping things organized is the best way to ensure a successful move. Sorting and decluttering your belongings before you begin the packing process can save you lots of time and effort in the long run.

Here are some packing tips to take note of as you begin:

    1. Color code your boxes – each room in your house should have a corresponding colored label. For example: use blue for the kitchen, green for the bathroom, and red for the master bedroom. When you arrive at your new home, put a piece of colored tape on the wall of each room so that the movers know where to put each box.
    2. Number your boxes. This ensures that every box gets to where it Is supposed to go and so that it is easy to tell if anything is missing.
    3. Make a log of how many boxes you have in each room. Note any important items that you will need right away when you get to your new home so that they are easy to find. Items like bed sheets, coffee makers, and toiletries are often needed right away.
    4. Check for local recycling and donation centers to drop off unwanted items before you move. Each unwanted item adds to the overall scope of your moving process, so you will want to prevent moving any items that you do not want or need.
    5. Pack heavy things in smaller boxes. Small boxes are easier to lift. Larger boxes should be saved for lightweight items such as blankets and towels.
    6. There are many places to find free boxes if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on packing materials. Visit local liquor stores, or bookstores, or check on online sites such as Craigslist well in advance before your move to start collecting ahead of time.

Many moving companies also offer packing services if you wish to hire help. However, you choose to do it, try and make the packing process as organized as possible to save you time in the long run.
