Pros of Moving to Chattanooga
Scenic Beauty and Outdoor Recreation: Chattanooga, often referred to as the “Scenic City,” is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including the Appalachian Mountains and the Tennessee River. Residents have access to numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and kayaking. The city is home to the Tennessee Riverwalk, a 13-mile path perfect for walking and biking, and Lookout Mountain, offering stunning views and attractions like Ruby Falls and Rock City.
Affordable Cost of Living: Chattanooga boasts a lower cost of living compared to the national average, making it an attractive option for individuals and families looking for affordability. The housing market is particularly appealing, with average home prices significantly lower than the national average. Renting is also affordable, offering diverse options for different budgets.
Thriving Arts and Culture Scene: The city is rich in arts and culture, with numerous galleries, theaters, and music venues. Chattanooga hosts several annual festivals, such as the Riverbend Festival, which features a variety of musical performances. The Hunter Museum of American Art and the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera are just a few of the cultural institutions that contribute to the city’s vibrant arts scene.
Growing Job Market: Chattanooga has experienced economic growth, resulting in a growing job market. The city has become a hub for startups and technology companies, partly due to its EPB Fiber Optics network, which provides some of the fastest internet speeds in the country. Major employers in the area include Volkswagen, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Community and Family-Friendly Environment: Chattanooga is known for its friendly and welcoming community. The city offers a variety of family-friendly activities and attractions, such as the Tennessee Aquarium and the Creative Discovery Museum. The city’s size is also ideal for those seeking a balance between urban and suburban living, providing a close-knit community feel with access to urban amenities.
Sustainability and Green Initiatives: Chattanooga has made significant strides in sustainability and environmental conservation. The city has numerous green spaces and parks, such as Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park. Efforts to improve public transportation and promote eco-friendly practices have positioned Chattanooga as a leader in environmental initiatives, making it an appealing choice for environmentally conscious individuals.
Education Opportunities: With institutions like the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Chattanooga State Community College, the city offers a range of educational opportunities for students and lifelong learners. These institutions contribute to the city’s vibrant educational environment, providing opportunities for higher education and professional development.
Cons of Moving to Chattanooga
Limited Public Transportation Options: Chattanooga’s public transportation system is limited compared to larger cities. The primary mode of public transport is the CARTA bus system, which may not be convenient for everyone due to its limited routes and infrequent schedules. This can make owning a car essential for getting around, which might not suit everyone, especially those used to robust public transit systems.
Humid Climate: Chattanooga experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. The summer months can be particularly uncomfortable for those not accustomed to high humidity levels, which often accompany temperatures in the 80s and 90s Fahrenheit. This can also contribute to higher air conditioning costs during the summer months.
Limited Diversity: While Chattanooga has been growing and becoming more diverse, it still lacks the cultural diversity found in larger metropolitan areas. This can impact the variety of cultural experiences and international cuisine available in the city. For those seeking a highly diverse community with a wide range of cultural activities, this might be a consideration.
Limited Nightlife Options: Chattanooga’s nightlife scene is relatively modest, especially when compared to larger cities. While there are bars, restaurants, and live music venues, the options are not as extensive as in places like Nashville or Atlanta. For those who thrive in vibrant nightlife environments, this might be a drawback.
Traffic Congestion in Certain Areas: While Chattanooga is not known for severe traffic congestion compared to major cities, certain areas can become congested, especially during peak hours. The infrastructure in some parts of the city has struggled to keep up with the population growth, leading to bottlenecks and delays in certain areas.
Allergy Concerns: Chattanooga, like much of Tennessee, can be challenging for those who suffer from allergies. The region’s climate and lush greenery can contribute to high pollen levels, especially during spring and fall. This might be a significant concern for individuals with severe allergies or respiratory issues.
Economic Disparities: Despite the city’s economic growth, Chattanooga still faces challenges related to income inequality and poverty in some areas. This can impact the quality of public services and schools in certain neighborhoods, making it important for prospective residents to research areas carefully before relocating.
Education System Challenges: While there are some strong schools in the Chattanooga area, the quality of education can vary significantly between different districts. Parents moving to Chattanooga might need to research school options thoroughly, as some schools may face challenges with funding and resources.

We are settled in, and have time to consider how easily the move was from Vonore, TN to Lansing, MI.The move not nearly as hectic as we thought it would be, this is in part due to the excellent performance by your people, namely Justin Schott the group leader. Justin had a handle on the entire move. Justin’s concerns were that the items be handled carefully and that they be placed where the client wanted them. Tim and Xavier are fine gentlemen, they too had the same concerns as Justin. Cody and Joe did their best to pack our goods so as to have little damage. The named are a credit to the Carey Moving Company. We are happy that we named you folks to do our transfer, thank you.

Pat-As mentioned we have not fully unpacked yet so hopefully all things are here. Other than that confirmation, the fellows who moved us were extremely courteous and mannerly. Much appreciated. They were very careful about not scratching the walls. They were also careful to ask where items should be placed. They arrived on time for delivery.

I would like the manager of the Arden office to know that the staff that handled our move into your storage facility was superb. Kim explained everything very clearly up front and there were no nasty surprises thereafter. Brian bossed the packing day and the loading day with ease and grace and I cannot tell you how relieved I was to know I was in good hands. The others, Lori, Doug, Tom, and Bob were also very good at what they do. Thank you. I look forward to delivery as soon as we find a place. Thank you.

I received my shipment on Sunday Feb 23rd. All items were in perfect shape. It was a great experience working with your company. Patrick was very helpful and knowledgeable. Being that I was in South Carolina for a very short time, he succeeded in getting everything set up in a timely manner to be packed and put on the truck. The packers were very nice and efficient and obviously packed items very well. The driver was thoughtful and called me several times to assure me that my items were on the way. He was friendly and efficient when he dropped off the boxes. You were very kind and helpful every time I called with a question and quickly handled all the paperwork. Please pass on our thanks and appreciation to all the people involved in the transport of our items.
