Move Packing: Things to Leave Off the Truck

When you move most of your belongings will go onto a moving truck. If you are hiring a moving company to help you, there are some things that you will want to keep on your person or arrange to be moved another way such as in your own personal car or a friend’s. While moving mishaps are unlikely, accidents do happen such as a collision, theft, or damage to items. Many moving companies offer insurance options for the value of your possessions, and on occasion homeowner’s insurance can cover the cost of damaged goods if they are claimed as part of your household. Although moving accidents don’t occur often, it’s still best to be prepared and to keep certain personal items on you throughout the moving process. You should be conscious of these items as you begin packing.

Items to Keep on You

  • Important Documents:
    • Birth certificates
    • Marriage certificates
    • Social security cards
    • Passports
    • Vehicle registrations
  • Personal Tech Items:
    • Laptops
    • Tablets
    • Cell Phones
  • Valuables:
    • Fine jewelry
    • Watches
    • Furs
    • Antiques
  • Sentimental Items:
    • Family heirlooms
    • Film photographs
    • Notebooks, journals, or letter collections that cannot be replaced

Packing Overnight Bags

Another thing to consider is how long you will need to travel during your move. A long distance or international move may require you to be between homes for several days. Do not pack items that you will need throughout the process.

  • Clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Medications
  • Phone/laptop chargers

Must-Have Kits

When you do finally arrive at your new home you will want to have certain items easily accessible and not packed away in boxes. You should prepare the following items for safe keeping.

  • Small Tool Kit (in case you need to fix or hang anything at the new house)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Favorite child’s or pet’s toys

Items a Moving Company Will Not Load Onto Moving Truck

Each company is different, but there are some items which are nearly universally avoided by moving companies.

  • Houseplants or Outdoors Plants
  • Any flammable items
    • Oil or gasoline
    • Paint
    • Fireworks
    • Aerosol cans
  • Firearms

With these items in mind, plan ahead, leave plenty of time for packing, and make any necessary arrangements ahead of moving day. For all of your moving and storage needs feel free to contact Carey Moving & Storage!
